THE NAMING OF THE LAMBS 2009

Every year at "Meet the Lambs Day"  (this year it is Saturday April 11 from 10 am to 4 pm) people see the signs with the lambs' names, breeds and date of birth and ask about the names,  who names them, what the origin of the names are etc. Well it is Raven who names them, and the stories behind then are a wide and varied as the names themselves.

This is page 2 of the Naming of the Lambs, don't forget the earlier lambs:

Banger & Mash - we have been watching Gordon Ramsay's cooking programs on BBC TV lately, so when these beautiful little twins arrived this morning, i named them in honor of some of the goofy British food names i'm learning from those shows! Banger is a boy with a BIG voice, Mash is his more refined sister.

Keith Olbermann - just as i was getting ready to watch "Countdown" this evening, Ian came in to tell me we had a lamb on the way. off to the barn i went, only to find the ewe taking forEVER to get the job done. i encouraged her, reminded her about lamaze breathing... finally she produced a BIG strong boy, who started baaing at the top of his lungs before he was even fully born! he kept it up, loud and emphatic, for a long long time, so i named him Keith Olbermann... and i was privileged to hear his very first Special Commentary!
DOB:
April 1, aprox 5 pm Sire: Guiness, Ewe: G20 BooBoo (12:5M,7F)
ChewBecka - ChewBecka is just about the FLUFFIEST lambie i've ever seen! since she is both so fluffy and so BIG, i wanted to name her ChewBacca, but Ian thought that was just too inappropriate for a girl lambie. so like the truly generous person i am, i compromised and settled for ChewBecka instead. she's going to be a big hit at Meet the Lambies Day this saturday!
)DOB: April 5, aprox 5 pm Sire: Guiness, Ewe: G8 ChaCha (13:5M,8F)
Sprite - Sprite was born during a time of much bustling and business after Sophie's puppies were born, so i (shamefully) forgot to name her at the time. now she's out in the pasture with her mama, flitting around like a little wood sprite and in addition she's a really sprightly little thing, so her name fits her perfectly.
DOB: April 6, aprox 8 pm Sire: Harp, Ewe: G43 (14:5M,9F)
GoGo - GoGo has two reasons for her name. at first i had just named her Go, after the Japanese board game that uses small black and white stones as game pieces -- she looks like a Go board, speckled pretty black and white all over. then i saw how frolicsome she is, and what a fancy stepper, so i expanded it to GoGo.
DOB: April 7, aprox 9 am Sire: Harp, Ewe: G41 (15:5M,10F)
Jo Ann - this beautiful lively little girl was born this morning while i was out running errands and delivering eggs, so she was my happy surprise when i returned home. her markings are just wonderful and her personality is a delight! i named her for my good friend Jo Ann, who had a terrible awful no-good day last friday and can use some of that sweet lambie energy. hey Jo, this lambie's for YOU! :-)
DOB:
April 9, aprox 11 am Sire: Harp, Ewe: G12 Constanza(16:5M,11F)

TidBit - TidBit was born at around 7:45 the morning of Meet the Lambies Day, while we were out in the barn working madly on getting the last work done to be ready for the big day. her mom is a small shetland and this was her first baby, but even so i could hardly believe how tiny and delicate this little lambie was! when i first picked her up, it was like picking up a handful of feathers. i said "well won't SHE be a delightful tidbit for all the visitors to see today!" so of course that became her name. she was indeed a huge hit, one of many favorites for the hundreds of people who came through the farm during an exhausting but wonderful day.
DOB:
April 10, aprox 7:45 am Sire: Guiness, Ewe: G46(17:5M,12F)

Ricardo Blanco - our easter morning lambie is BIG strong boy! he's half corriedale, a larger breed of sheep, and compared with the little shetland babies he is many many times their size. he's all black, but i named him Ricardo Blanco in honor of our very good friend Richard White. Richard has been bringing his dogs here for herding lessons for many years and has helped us so much on the farm that we can never tell him enough how much we appreciate him! hey Richard: "this lamb is your lamb!"
DOB:
April 12, aprox 5 am Sire: EnricoIII, Ewe: cor1(18:6M,12F)

Lambzilla - You can probably guess how he got his name! his poor mama was working so hard, doing her LaMaze breathing, pushing mightily... but she just couldn't get this BIG lambie out! Ian had to be midwife and help matters along, which he did very smoothly and successfully. that was one relieved mama, and one huge new black lambie, now towering over the others in the moms-and-lambs pasture!
